About John Swainson
John Swainson, general manager of IBM's Application & Integration Middleware Division, has global responsibility for WebSphere, IBM's J2EE-based Internet infrastructure software. His organization, one of five divisions of the IBM Software Group, includes more than 6,000 developers and marketing professionals in 11 laboratories worldwide. Under Swainson's leadership, WebSpherewhich includes WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Studio development tools, WebSphere MQ, WebSphere Commerce, WebSphere Portal, and wireless, host access, and voice solutionshas experienced 12 consecutive quarters of growth.
Swainson joined IBM in 1978 in Vancouver, Canada, as a systems engineer and has held a variety of sales, marketing, and development positions, including vice president of Application Development Solutions and director of the IBM Toronto Laboratory. In January 1997, he moved to the United States to become the general manager of IBM's Application Development Tools group. He assumed his current position in October 1999.
Swainson is a member of the IBM Worldwide Management Council, the Corporate Technical Committee, and the Board of Governors for the IBM Academy of Technology. He holds a degree in engineering from the University of British Columbia.
