Back to Basics for Sun Software
CTO John Fowler targets complexity in his vision of practical Java.
Interview by Dan Ruby, Kay Keppler, and Tim Haight

Posted February 24, 2003

John Fowler
CTO for Software, Sun Microsystems

As Sun Microsystems seeks to engineer a turnaround in its software business, it has appointed experienced development manager John Fowler to serve as chief technology officer and lead technical spokesman. The company has never lacked big-picture visionaries, and Fowler holds his own at the 30,000-foot level. But he focuses much more on in-the-trenches issues involving practical implementation of Web services and masking the complexities of Java development and deployment. In this recent interview with Fawcette Technical Publications' editors Dan Ruby, Kay Keppler, and Tim Haight, Fowler claims that the company's "the network is the computer" vision has remained constant and provides a context for today's strategies around operating systems, Web services, grid computing, and Java development.
