William A. Swope VSLive! SF, Day 3, February 14, 2002 — Opening his February 14, 2002 VSLive! keynote address, William A. Swope, Vice President and Co-General Manager of Intel's Software and Solutions Group, said, "Web Services are happening with or without Intel, and with or without you."

Swope today also announced and demonstrated VTune Performance Analyer 6.0, highlighting its support for .NET and C# and its ability to profile managed and unmanaged code. He also called attention to Intel Developer Services, a Web-based resource providing developers with technical information, tools, and services, including a .NET Platform area.

Making it clear that Intel is betting big on XML Web Services and Microsoft's part in it, Swope explained that he believes Web Services will have a fundamental impact on the way software is developed. Said Swope, "What you're in the middle of is more than a version of a compiler. At Intel we view this as a fundamental change. … The adoption rate of Web Services is going to be faster than any other paradigm adopted previously."

Swope made a point of Intel's intention to cooperate with Microsoft to make .NET-enabled applications work smoothly on Intel hardware, saying, "If your Microsoft apps are running on Intel silicon, we are doing a lot of work to ensure that your applications will run optimally," starting with core technologies such as the .NET Common Language Runtime, ASP.NET, and ADO.NET, then progressing on to .NET Servers, IIS, and SQL. Said Swope, "This is a fundamental change in how we're placing our multibillion R&D bets."
