Do On-Device Debugging for J2ME Apps
A "breakthrough" in J2ME development takes the guesswork out of device-specific debugging.

In what Metrowerks and Sony Ericsson hailed as a "breakthrough" in J2ME development, the companies demonstrated on Tuesday the ability to perform on-device debugging of a J2ME application running on a Sony Ericsson T610 phone, using Metrowerks' CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7 development environment. Developers can perform on-device debugging using a serial cable, rather than debugging within a software emulator running on a personal computer or through a remote debugger over a TCP/IP connection.

"One of the big problems with J2ME development is that the emulators are completely inaccurate," said Ralph Barbagallo, President of Flarb Development, a J2ME developer that develops midlets for handsets. "With CodeWarrior's on-device debugging, you can step through the code as it executes on the handset. This makes it possible to deal with device-specific bugs by seeing how your code is running on the device instead of making guesses."

"Palm developers have been able to debug applications on the device using CodeWarrior tools for a number of years," added Gerardo A. Dada, Director of Marketing Services for Metrowerks. "This is a big step ahead for J2ME development, which will result in better software for the devices that support on-device debugging."
