You can speed up your Web pages considerably by paying close attention to what goes on under the covers. For example, server-side controls save view state by default. This won't make much difference with textboxes and other simple controls. (1) It's another matter with more complex controls such as the data grid on this Web page. This grid is bound to the Customer table of the Northwind database. EnableViewState is enabled by default. (2) This bloats the overhead on the grid of the Base-64 block of code to more than 61K. (3) However, turning off the view state in the HTML makes this page extremely small. This example, with no controls, is less than 100 bytes.
