Double-clicking on a simple XAML file invokes the Presentation Client Shell Handler, which displays an IE 6.05 page with a TextPanel for this example. You can display "pure" XAML files, which don't include procedural code, in IE 6.05 without compiling them. If the file contains procedural code, you must compile the XAML content before it displays. This means that most XAML files in Whidbey projects show an empty page or error message if you open them from the file system with the Shell Handler.
